Sasikala PhD is the Head of Basic Science Research labs and group leader, islet biology laboratory at Asian Institute of Gastroenterology. Currently her research focus is mainly on Type 3C diabetes associated with pancreatic disease. Recent studies from this laboratory showed that β cell dysfunction exists in non diabetic chronic pancreatitis patients even before β cell apoptosis and clinical diabetes occurs in these patients. Arresting loss of β cell function in pancreatic disease and protecting β cell mass is important in the treatment of diabetes.
